Book Madness- A Book Tournament

Excitement was reigning high in Mrs. Varadarajan’s 2ndgrade classroom, as reading had reached a new hype. It was time for Book Madness and the youngsters of Room 30 were ready with their nominations for awards.  While some maybe welcoming spring, these die-hard book fans welcomed the Book Tournament, a highlight of their 2ndgrade year.  They had written letters nominating their beloved books for awards in ways that would convince others to love them as much as they do. They made passionate speeches and then it was time for the sweet taste of rivalry. The room was busy as students cast votes and titles vied against each other. The nominees included Funny Books, Friendship Books, Life Lessons Books, Adventure Books, Picture Books, Graphic Novels and Non-fiction Books, all fighting for the top spot of Most Favorite Book of Room 30. Later, as parents walked around the Book Fair, learning about the favorite books of our second graders, there was a buzz about who the winner would be. At the end of the celebration, the results were announced. Hold your breath;  the winner- The Most Favorite Book of the 2ndgraders of Room 30 was Mine Craft: The Island by Max Brooks!!!! The book tells the story of a hero stranded in the world of Minecraft. As Grisha.N,  who had nominated the book, made an acceptance speech on behalf of the author, the message was clear; “Books indeed had stolen the day”. So if you are looking for something to read this summer, here’s a list you might want to consider. And do check out the convincing letters that are now on display on our bulletin board.

Until next time, happy reading!
