AI in Princeton Public Schools

The concept of artificial intelligence has existed as early as the 1940’s. Artificial intelligence is a term that applies to any system that seeks to perform a role that was previously attributed to human intelligence. 

AI refers to all types of generative artificial intelligence technologies that create new content or outputs from a prompt to produce text, images, videos, or music.

AI tools refer to software applications and platforms that utilize AI technologies to perform specific tasks and solve problems that typically require human intelligence. 

Generative language models are extremely complicated mathematical models that ingest a large amount of training data in order to learn patterns among that training data, with the goal of being able to generate responses to prompts that approximate the response a human would give. These responses can be text, images, videos, and more.

As an example, you could imagine a generative language model as a mathematical formula where you know what output you want to receive for a given input, but not the appropriate parameters to make the formula work in that way. The formula therefore starts out as being very inaccurate, and then is refined by lots of trial and error.

The district recognizes that AI is a powerful tool that has the potential to support and enhance teaching and learning. However, it is also the responsibility of the district to teach students how to use AI critically and responsibly. 

The below chart was created to help support staff and students by creating a common understanding for when and how AI can be used by students for completing assignments.

Currently, most AI platforms require users to be at least 13 years or older. In many cases, users under the age of 18 also need parental consent to use the tool. 

The district has adopted SchoolAI as a platform for teachers to use with students. It is FERPA and COPPA compliant and is under our PPS’s technology umbrella.  More information about this platform can be found HERE.

Stanford University's 2024 AI Index Report - A comprehensive report covering various topics around AI including research and development, technical performance, and education. 

AI Initiative - Common Sense Media's website which contains AI product ratings and reviews, research, and AI literacy resources.

Free Resources to Explore and Use ChatGPT and AI - A comprehensive list of websites, articles, videos, podcasts, and online tools, curated by Common Sense Media, to help better understand the world of AI. 

AI Literacy Podcast - Hosted by the founder and president of the AI in Management Association, and a fellow of the AI Research Center at the Emlyon Business School in Paris. This podcast provides a great introduction to AI from a global perspective. 

ChatGPT and Beyond - This article by Common Sense Media reviews some of the concerns with AI (abuses, misinformation, ethics, etc.) and provides resources for teaching children how to identify the issues and how to use AI appropriately.  

5 Tips for Talking to Your Kids About Generative AI - This two minute video provides tips for helping parents talk to their children about AI as well as ideas for how to explore AI together to better understand both the positive and negative impacts of the tool. Under the featured video is a catalog of videos to help parents and children better understand and manage AI, as well as general tips for online safety. 

AI Literacy Lessons for Grades 6-12 - Nine lessons that span from 15-50 minutes long that teach students about AI.

Parents' Ultimate Guide to AI Companions and Relationships - An article written by Common Sense Media which introduces parents to AI, appropriate use of AI with children as well as the risks associated with it.
