Tiger Band

Prerequisites: One or two years of school or private lessons on their instrument and familiarity with the basic fingering and/or positions of their instrument.

This course is designed to enhance a student's ability to read and play band literature. Big Band literature and basic Jazz Ensemble literature will be analyzed. Students will develop aural, sight-reading, and analytical skills. The content will include a sequential development of competencies relating to technical facility, and music terminology, including: notation, intervals, scales and keys, chords (rhythm instruments), and rhythmic patterns. It will also include introduction to musical devices such as intonation, blend, phrasing, harmony, solo, articulation, dynamics, and additional music concepts. Students will be exposed to a wide variety of musical literature. This course should develop and enhance each student's awareness and appreciation of band music and performance.
 

Tiger Band Level II 

Prerequisites: Audition required. Students should have at least two years of school or private lessons on their instrument. Students are required to be familiar with all fingerings and/or positions of their instrument.

This course is designed to enhance a student's ability to read and play basic band literature at a medium level of difficulty. Basic Big Band literature and basic Jazz Ensemble literature will be studied. Students will develop aural, sight-reading and analytical skills. The course will include the sequential development of competencies relating to technical facility, and music terminology which include: notation, intervals, scales and keys, chords (rhythm instruments) and rhythmic patterns. It will also include an introduction to musical devices: intonation, blends, phrasing, harmony, articulation, and dynamics. Students will explore a wide variety of musical literature and apply their knowledge and skill to this music. Entrance into this band course is based on an audition by band department instructors. This course should develop and enhance each student's appreciation of band music and performance.

Nassau Band I 

Prerequisites: Audition required and two years of school or private lessons on their instrument. Students are required to be familiar with all fingerings and/or positions of their instrument including some alternate fingering and positions.

Jazz Ensemble

Prerequisite: Audition required. Students should have at least three years of school or private lessons on their instrument and be familiar with all fingerings and/or positions of their instrument including some alternate fingerings and positions.

 

This course is designed to enhance a student's ability to read and play band literature at a medium-difficult to difficult level. Big Band literature and basic Jazz Ensemble literature will be studied. Students will develop aural, sight-reading and analytical skills. The content will include an in-depth sequential development of competencies relating to technical facility, rudiments and music terminology, which include: notation, intervals, scales and keys, chords (rhythm instruments) and rhythmic patterns. It will also include musical devices such as intonation, blend, phrasing, harmony, solo, articulation, dynamics, and additional music concepts. Students will gain an awareness of a wide variety of musical literature. This course is designed as a pre-Studio Band level performance ensemble. Entrance into this band course is based on an audition process set up by the band department.

Princeton Studio Band 

Prerequisites: Audition required. Students must have at least three years of school or private lessons on their instrument, familiarity with all fingerings and/or positions of their instrument including alternate fingerings and/or positions (use of F attachment for trombone). Students should demonstrate an advanced level of technical, analytical, and sight reading competencies.

This course is designed to enhance a student's ability to recognize, understand, and play advanced through college level performance band literature. Big Band literature and basic Jazz Ensemble literature will be studied. Students will develop aural, sight-reading, and analytical skills. The content will include a sequential development of competencies relating to technical facility, rudiments, and music terminology, which include: notation, intervals, scales and keys, chords (rhythm instruments), and rhythmic patterns. It will also include musical devices such as intonation, blend, phrasing, harmony, solo, articulation, dynamics, and additional music concepts. Students will study a wide variety of musical literature. Students are selected through an audition process set up by the band department. This course should develop and enhance each student's awareness and appreciation of band music and performance.
