Lead Testing
On July 13, 2016, the State Board of Education adopted regulations at N.J.A.C. 6A:26-12.4 Safe drinking water regarding the testing for lead in drinking water in public schools throughout New Jersey. The regulations were amended and readopted in August 2020. The amendment requires all covered entities to test for lead in drinking water every three years beginning with the 2021-22 school year.
Princeton Public Schools has completed its 2024-25 testing and found seven fountains that exceeded the 15 parts per billion threshold. Four of those fountains had been shut off since testing in 2021-22; they were only turned on to be tested this year. The other three were turned off as soon as the district was made aware of the exceedances. Replacement fountains were ordered, have been received and will be replaced during the week ending April 18, 2025. These fountains will be retested once installed. At each of these units, where there was a fountain and a sink, we have decided to test the sink faucet. Tests were performed on Tuesday April 8; it will take some time for results to be returned. We will assess and respond based on the results.
When the testing was done in the 2021-22 school year, there were 35 elevated samples. At that time, each device was shut down, removed, or replaced depending on the need. If replaced, testing was repeated before students or staff were allowed to use the fountain. If the 2022 remediations had not worked, we could have expected to see very different results in 2025 than we experienced.
