Summer for the Princeton Public Schools community is, as it should be, a time for rest and rejuvenation, but it's also an opportunity for learning and growth away from the demanding schedule of the academic year. Some of our students spend part of their summer vacation strengthening their skills in a variety of subjects as part of the Extended School Year (ESY) program which is offered at the elementary, middle, and high school  level.

  • The Princeton Middle School's ESY program helps students hone their literacy and math skills in addition to providing social opportunities, recreational outings, and guidance for summer reading.
  • A week-long Dual Language Immersion camp, held in early July, allowed students in grades 1-5 spent to practice their Spanish skills and learn about Spanish-speaking countries. They also took breaks from their studies to play soccer and swim.
  • The High School Counseling Department again offered its Evolution of the College Essay course, which offers students in grades 11 and 12 guidance in writing their college essays.
  • An intensive math program designed for rising 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students allowed approximately 75 students to learn a year's worth of geometry, algebra 2, or precalculus in only six weeks. The students then must pass a proficiency test to move to the next level.
  • Rising 9th-graders sharpened their knowledge of science in a one-week Summer Bridge program that examined environmental themes and allowed the students to serve as mentors to sixth graders. Rising 10th-graders tackled advanced coursework as part of the accelerated summer chemistry program.
  • Outside the classroom, high school students are beginning to map their futures by exploring work and travel in preparation for post-graduation life and work.
