Katie McDonnell, a PHS senior in the Science Research Program, has been conducting research on the effect of micro plastics on the health of Poecilia reticulata and Kuhli loaches. Katie was motivated to conduct this project because of the recent rise in plastics in our waterways. During the research phase of Katie's project she read many articles that focused on the effects of these plastics on organisms living currently, but found very little research on the lasting effects. Katie is hoping to fill this gap by conducting a generational study. She was recognized with an Honorable Mention and the NOAA Taking the Pulse of the Planet Award at the Mercer County Science Fair earlier this month.
