On Tuesday, July 24, 2018, the Princeton Public Schools Board of Education voted unanimously to name Mark Shelley as the next principal of Riverside Elementary School. Mr. Shelley is currently the Humanities Supervisor at Princeton High School.

Mr. Shelley has more than 20 years of teaching experience, has national board certification, is trained as an instructional coach by the state of New Jersey, served as a coach for Odyssey of the Mind while teaching in South Carolina, and coached both basketball and cross-country during his time as a teacher at PHS.  As Supervisor of Humanities, Mr. Shelley has been instrumental in helping reconceive summer reading so that it fosters for students choice, joy, and an exploration of diverse genres and cultures. He helped to infuse racial literacy and non-dominant narratives into the social studies curriculum, and he worked closely with the special education supervisor to support co-teaching teams within his department.

“Mark is a true instructional leader whose kindness and care for children and adults is apparent in all he says and does,” said Superintendent Steve Cochrane. “His intelligence, integrity, and deep desire to learn with and from others make him an exemplary educator and leader. He is joining a truly caring community at Riverside, and I know he looks forward to getting to know all of Riverside’s staff, parents, and children.”

Mr. Shelley will begin his role as the principal of Riverside Elementary starting on August 1, 2018.
